Farmhouse Chic

Some of my tastes have changed over the years. My taste in food has stayed the same, but things like my taste in clothing, and taste in decor have shifted a little.

I never used to like "salvaged" or "pre-loved" items. I think it was because I was anal about germs (even though I knew everything got washed), which is silly, because I would stay in hotels on vacation, and eat on "pre-used" plates in restaurants all the time. But now I LOVE it! I especially love mixing rustic, farm-house style items with new pieces.

...........Photobucket

It's a mixture of the textures and the faded colors, and the potential stories behind each piece that are such a drawcard for me. That's why I absolutely head-over-heels fell in love with Faded Prairie.

Photobucket

Kristin's gorgeous store is a menagerie of pre-loved beauties that would perfectly compliment any home. I am not exaggerating when I say that I love every piece in her stunningly styled store. Her inspiration comes from yesteryear; her imagination wandering to gentler times, hoping to recapture those faded pieces of the past and bring them to life again.
She finds great joy and fulfillment in discovering old items and giving them a new lease on life. Her love for "Farmhouse Chic" is dual - not only does she adore how it looks, but being a fifth generation farmer/rancher - it's also wonderfully personal. Photobucket

Some of Kristin's favorite pieces are old Tractor Boxes. She explained to me that "these were such an important part of a farmer's life. When they were in the middle of their 80 acres, they didn't have time to run into town for a part - they relied on what was at their fingertips." She also loves how they look placed in a more feminine side of a home - it makes a lovely contrast.

With her color palette of choice being in the Natural hues - soft creams, natural browns and faded greys, Kristin keeps Faded Prairie stocked with items in those lovely shades, but also keeps pops of color in the store, like a sun peeking out over the horizon. With her beautifully simple tastes comes a love for simple desserts - her favorite being Strawberry Shortcake. Hmmmm... that sounds like the perfect little afternoon tea while sitting at the ranch, watching the sun go down...
Photobucket

Kristin is generously giving away one of the items in the above image to one lucky reader. To enter, please leave a comment here telling me which of the three items you'd like to win (the lovely Number Four Tote, the Two Vintage Clock Faces, or the Distressed Wooden Number). Please also tell me what your favorite thing is about the Farmhouse Chic look. I will announce the winner on Sunday.

PS. Kristin also has a lovely blog here. Stop in and say hi!

What a great blog Dionne! I love it! My favorite thing about the farmhouse chic look is that it takes me back to my childhood and reminds me of my Granny and Papa. I was raised by my grandparents for a good portion of my life. They had a huge garden and every summer, Granny would spend SOOO much time canning fresh vegetables from the garden so we could eat them all year round - So the blue jars make me think of her. And my Papa was in the army and was a retired postal worker, so he had lots of old trunks, tins, boxes and such and the rusty metal box reminds me of a lot of the things that were out in his shop. It was a great time, back when I ran through the corn patch with my red pigtails and my trusty beagle, following closely behind. :) Thanks for the post and bringing back such wonderful memories. :)

*PS - I like the #4 tote.*

Wonderful blog, Dionne! What I love about the Farmhouse Chic look is the comfort and peace it gives me. There are pieces that remind me of my childhood also, spending summers with my Aunt and Uncle in Southern New Jersey in their refurbished log home. What fun that was, living in the woods, fishing for sunnies and walking through the path to the swimming lake.
I love the clock faces. They would look fabulous on the wall with an arrangement of sepia photos.

Oh my, her store is so beautiful!! I love the way it looks - so vintage and they will look so great in the cottage house or country house...

I'd love to win the Two Vintage Clock Faces... Yes, love love love to win! :)

I love farmhouse chic, but not all over. I love little accents of it. It fits perfectly with my eclectic style ;)
If I win I would have a hard time choosing btwn the two clock faces and the distressed wooden number 8!

Meghan said...

I love the distressed wooden number. The distressed look reminds me of the history those pieces must have seen - and as a history teacher, I love stories about where things came from!

Erin said...

What a lovely store, I only wish she had more to look at! I am a huge fan of the farmhouse chic look, and while I don't have a lot of pieces in my home yet, I'm working on it. You can't just wish these things into existence, it takes time scouring garage sales, the internet, etc., and I really have to fall in love with a piece before I buy. The story behind it is a huge draw for me, too, thinking about what it was used for, how times were simpler. *Sigh*.

Out of the three items, I'd probably choose the large number 8. I don't think my husband would find it as endearing as I do, but oh well, he can deal with it!

This is a great little shop! I have this thing for old-world clocks, so I would definitely have to go with the two vintage clock faces. :)

Bethany Dirksen said...

Isn't it funny how out tastes can change like that? I used to really be into the "distressed" look myself. While I still fully appreciate it, I am tending to go for a new vintage look. Mid Century Modern! Still used stuff...but more of a clean line finished look to it. I wish it wasn't so popular these days because it makes all of those vintage finds more expensive!

Joshlin said...

I love the look because it is so vintage. The way I grew up was filled with a lot of this. I just love it.

I would pick the Number Four Tote. Only becouse I have some clocks a bit like this and don't know where to put the number just yet in my home:)

I anything vintage because it is sweet and nostalgic for me. I love the farmhouse look as well because I grew up on a small farm and I loved it!
If I win, I'd pick the number 4 tote.

Oh those medicine boxes are so cute! I like this rustic decor. I love the old clocks she is giving away.

My favourite thing about the Farmhouse Chic look is exactly what Kristin mentioned - the contrast of a rustic piece against something pretty or "girly". I also love the history behind some of these rustic pieces. I would definitely choose the tote, I think it would be perfect for trips to the library (where you know I am everyday)!

I just found your blog and it quickly became a standard on my favorites menu.

Farmhouse chic is my favorite! I especially love mixing it with really modern piece. It's a little bit of 'today' while cherishing the past. I love the objects that make up farmhouse chic because they all seem to hold a story. Where was it use? How was it used? Who used to use this piece? Did they love it? Did they hate it?
The best part is we will never know.. we can only imagine.

Thanks again! All the pieces are great, but I really love the number #8!

I really love the distressed wood number! Thank you for the giveaway!
My favorite thing about the look is that is is one of three I have always wanted a house decorated in. I have a very eclectic house now, and I would really love a home with mid-eastern ethnic design, and also a nice rustic relaxed home decorating like that, because it seems like you wouldn't have to spend all your time worrying about making your house perfect!

I love the clock faces.

Farmhouse Chic: As a California girl, I used to hate living in Idaho (my ex-husband and kids are keeping me here) and tried to make my shop emulate French country antiques. With the new trends toward Farmhouse Style, living in Idaho is right where its at! I've found myself embracing it and blooming where I'm planted.
P.S. Love Kristen's blog!

Great post, Dionne! I've always been addicted to flea markets, farm sales, antique malls- where you find all this wonderful stuff! It's such fun, I agree. I kind of moved on to more elegant antiques as I got older and gave my primitives to my kids. But it's all still in the family!

As far as the giveaway is concerned, I love the tote!

I've been following Faded Prairie for a while now because farmhouse chic is TOTALLY my decor style. I have always like Shabby Chic but it was a bit too girly for my farmer hubby. Farmhouse chic just feels like home to me! I love to mix pieces we find on our turn of the century farm with pieces I gather from across the country!
If I were to miraculously win I'd love the tote most!!!

I would love the number 4 tote or maybe the number 8. Oh dear, I can't decide. Either one will do. I love them both. I love faded prairie. I love what she does to her pictures and the stuff that catches her eye when she is out thrifting. Like the red chair she discovered last week. Love it!!!
This is the first time I have been to your site and love the way you displayed her items that she has on sale. Wishing myself luck!!!

I love vintage things for the pleasant feel they have of history, of having lived and been used. I also love how so many things retain their function to this day, having lasted way longer than any new item will. I'm also a closet romantic, and the nostalgic yesteryear mood of farmhouse findings fits in nicely.

WOW, these are some very interesting items that are being offered. If I had to pick one thing out of the three it would be the Distressed Wooden Number. I'd pick that because it would add a little bit of Rustic beauty to just about anything I'd hang it on. That, and it reminds me of the movie "9" for some reason. My favorite thing about The Farmhouse Chic look? Rustic, aged, vintage, somewhat creepy, whimsical, the look is just too cool.

Great giveaway!

I would definitely have to go with the number eight, which would promptly mount horizontally on my bedroom wall. Infinity! I'm a physics major, so anything mathematical makes me jump for joy!

I just adore the farmhouse chic look! I think a lot of it has to do with my love of peeling paint --everything is just so much more interesting with visible layers! I like to imagine the story behind each coat of paint... :)

Thanks so much for the opportunity!

Since time on earth is short (we lost Grandpa last November), I would have to say that I love the clock faces...they would go perfectly in my kitchen or living room.
Thanks for the post!

I love the No. 4 tote - so nice!

I think my favorite thing about the Farmhouse Chic look is that it reminds me of my grandmother's house in Alabama - there was a barn and a chicken coop just outside, and inside she had all these antique plates with faded flowers and soft cotton aprons. Her house always smelled like biscuits, too.

Ah, memories.

those two vintage clock faces are fantastic! I'd love to win! I was never one to be drawn to "salvaged" or "pre-loved" items before either, but I've come around lately and am more often seeing the beauty in vintage and I too like the idea that they are storied pieces rather than mass produced items. I think I blame this shift on etsy! :)

p.s. the prairie wheat clutch in kristin's shop is adorable! and I love how she says it is "sure to turn the head of that farm boy down by the river." too cute!

Is it possible for me to express how much I love this shop? I wish I could take the essence of this shop, paint it all over my dorm and then take a nap in a haystack that will, of course, magically appear in the middle of the room. Sounds relaxing, right? Well, that's the vibe I get from this shop. I love the blue antique jars, I always get odd looks from my parents for collecting glass bottles and here are some gorgeous ones staring me in the face! I think I'd like to win the clock faces if I am to be the lucky one to win.

i kinda felt the same way when iw as younger! you WANT something that's old??!! i didn't understand. Then we found a name a date from the 1700's on the back of a drawer of a small desk my mom bought at an antique store. It was so cool thinking about who used this desk and made it and where its been.

Farmhouse Chic makes me feel welcome!
