January 26th is when we celebrate the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 (basically when the British claimed sovereignty over Australia). And back home, this day is usually celebrated with lots of barbequeing, fun at the beach and Pavlova.
........

Even though I am all the way over in Houston, I still wanted to pay homage to my roots - so to celebrate this day, I made some Pavlova Cupcakes and some Damper.

Tonight I am teaching some of my American friends the Australian National Anthem, and some Aussie slang. It should be fun. It's funny to hear what people from other countries know or think about Australia.
What are some things that you know about Australia? And if you're an Aussie - what did you get up to for Australia Day?

Your cupcakes look amazing, Dionne! I LOVED my time visiting Australia last year for so many reasons. I love the laid back culture, the beautiful, tropical birds and wildlife. I spent a month there for my honeymoon, so it brings back memories of an almost magical and special experience, and my husband and I agree that Australia has by far the most amazing desserts!
What I know about Australia is that every. single. person I meet from there is always smiling and just as friendly and happy as can be! Happy Australia Day to you!
I only know the cliche- kangaroos.. kuala bears.. crocodile dundee... Also from tv shows and movies like Lost- the airplane came from Australia and that John Locke tried to do a walk about in a wheel chair. :) Wow I sound smart.
Those cupcakes look yummy!
i've never met anybody from australia before....wait, that's a lie, i met a kangaroo once.
when i was in high school my friend worked for the local wild animal park. She occassionally had to take animals home at night with her to take care of them....once she brought over a baby kangaroo! It was the cutest thing ever and he just hopped around our apartment...and she bottle fed him too..it was so cute.
I'd love to try one of those cupcakes! Yum Yum!
You say Aussie and the first thing that comes to mind is hair product. Is that wrong? :)
Oh how cute!! Happy Australia day!!! I definitely want to go there one day!
Happy Australia Day! I'm DYING to go there...
Happy Australia Day!! The food looks great.
When I was really little, my parents bought a whole set of cartoons about a little girl who befriends a kangaroo looking for her joey. I can't remember the name of it now, but was part cartoon/part actual live video of animals in Australia. I LOVED those cartoons, and I still remember how fascinated I was by the accent, the animals, and the scenery.
I'd love to visit someday!
Happy Aussie day my friend!
I have a cook book by Bill Granger (I hear he's HUGE in Oz) and I love making all the traditional Aussie recipes in that book :)
Happy Australia Day! Pavlova cupcakes sound divine to me.
And once again, I adore your drawing!
those cupcakes are so adorable! i love the flag detail!
Happy Austrailia Day! Those cupcakes look delicious!
My goodness do those cupcakes look delish! :D I dated an Aussie once and he showed me some Aussie money, and taught me some slang (most I've now forgotten...). But something he told me that I've never forgotten is how there are these spiders that get in everything! Even in your car, and how he was driving down the road and pulled down the visor to have a spider fall in his lap. EEEEEKKKK!!! He told me about jellyfish and spiders and snakes enough that I'm hesitant to ever go there... lol. But maybe one day I will. :D Happy Aussie Day to you!
Fun times! :-) I've always wanted to go to Australia, it's on my life list!!!
I can't wait to visit Australia one day (I've never been!) And your slang really is the best - fair dinkum!
hehe, its funny that australians celebrate the british coming when americans celebrate the british leaving. oh well, as a dual citizen, you get to have twice as many parties!
Hello amazing cupcakes! Happy Australia Day!
So, I received my first installment of my D'Lischka goodies. They are to die for!!!
Great looking cupcakes. I learned today that an Australian invented the latex gloves (of which I am allergic). Here's to that!
Please tell me more about this Aussie Damper. It looks tasty. Such a cute party you threw! If I was in Houston, I'd be there in a heartbeat! ;)
i had no idea you're an aussie! do you speak with a cool accent?! I wish I could hear it =)

Happy day to you! That damper looks great...and I will have "Waltzing Matilda" in my head for the rest of the night!

Damper looks delicious! I really only know bout the fabulous scuba diving, and the orchestra hall...or whatever it's called. I'd LOVE to visit someday...when I actually have money I don't owe to anyone lol. :) Happy Aussie day!!!!!!!!! :D
Happy Australia Day!
It was bloody hot and sweaty (33 deg). We went to the circus and then spent most of the day inside with the a/c on. Not very patriotic of us!
Happy Australia Day!!
Let's see - your country has great surf (cora reefs too), beautiful animals and beautiful people like you!!
That cupcake looks sooooo yum!
Happy Australia Day to you! I just learned something new (being from the States). I'm glad that you posted about this holiday!
FLYING DOCTORS! My favourite tv show for ages and ages (young ages, that is).
And Baz Luhrman, of course. The genius.
And you!
Love,
A.

I actually don't know much about australia, unfortunately! I do know that if I went there--which I hope someday I do!-- that I would get very burned if I didn't put on any sunblock! (that's what I've heard at least, that the sun's rays are very strong... am I right?)
oh, and I also know it is a beautiful country from which come sweet and talented bloggers :)
Those delicious looking cupcakes make me want to celebrate Australia day!
