We live in a big world. There are things going on in other countries that I can't even imagine - it seems like a whole other world... but nope, their suffering is going on in the same world as ours. This planet is just so diverse, and so vast - with so many different people, cultures, climates and landscapes. The thought of all these different things going on so far away seems unreal. Like a novel. A novel about another world, another reality. It doesn't really seem like our neighbor's reality, does it?

I like how blogging makes the world shrink. It brings people's issues from all over the world directly to us from their perspective, instead of some stoic newscaster who is reading from a teleprompt. What our blog friends are sharing might not seem 'newsworthy', their stories may or may not seem big enough to frontline on CNN, but they are real windows into real lives, and I love that about blogging.
Some of you who read my blog are friends from everyday life (like Eric, Maggi, Andrew, Sabrina, Ashley, and of course my husbo Brian), and the rest of you are people that I probably wouldn't have met in everyday life, it's blogging that introduced us. I would like to shrink our world a little more and find out more about you. Laura posted some questions on her blog the other day, and here are my answers to them. I would love it if you would comment back with your answers! And for you peeps that I love from everyday life - I am sure there's stuff I don't know about you, so you can play along!
1. What gets you out of bed in the morning? Brian wakes me up every weekday at 7am before he leaves for work. We pray together, and then I give him a kiss and see him off. It's the best start to the day that I can think of!
2. What scares you, and how often do you think about it? Losing a loved one. I don't think about it often, but when I do, it scares me.
3. How important is making a home to you? For example, do you like a home to meditate in, cook good food in, or have people over? As I have blogged before, I was raised in a very hospitable family. My parents are eternal hosts, always entertaining, and welcoming. I have definitely gotten that from them - it is very important to me that my home be comfortable not only to us, but to those that we love.
4. Where in the world would you like to travel next? Either Korea or Italy. Brian is half Korean, so I would love to go there to explore that side of his heritage, and I love Korean food! The Korean culture is so different from that of the Western world, I am always fascinated by other cultures. Italy is also on my wish-list. My Dad is Italian, and I would love to meet his side of the family, and see the beautiful scenery.
5. What is one of your fondest childhood memories? When we were all still living at home back in Australia, we would go on family outings. My Dad and my brother love watching planes, so on one of our outings we went to the airport. It was a pretty airport with greenery everywhere, so we set up a picnic at the airport and watched all the planes coming in and going out.
6. How do you like to spend your weekends? Of course with Brian. I love trying out new cafes and new restaurants that I have never been to before. Below are pics that I took at two of my favorites.

I can't wait to read all your answers!
And I was featured on the Glamour website the other day - check it out here!

Losing my husband early in life. I think about it almost on a daily basis.

1. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
~Knowing that I have to get up and go to work, no matter how much I don't want to. And Bob & Tom on the radio, which usually annoys me enough to get me to turn off the alarm and finally get up, 30 minutes after its gone off.
2. What scares you, and how often do you think about it?
~Many things, and often. Something happening to Steve or a loved one, my debt, my every day fears, if and how I've let everyone I know down in some way or another, what if I can't have kids, when's my dad going to die, etc. My fears and demons hang on my shoulder near constantly.
3. How important is making a home to you? For example, do you like a home to meditate in, cook good food in, or have people over?
~I LOVE having a home where people can come and enjoy. I love cooking for friends, having them round for dinner or knitting and tea or just to watch a movie. It makes me so happy to have a social home.
4. Where in the world would you like to travel next?
~Ireland or Italy. But anywhere would be grand.

~There are so many, but at the moment, hanging out with my Grandpa in his shop while he tinkered on his inventions and told me stories of his younger life. I miss him so.
6. How do you like to spend your weekends?
~Doing something. It's no fun to stay in bed all day, and I love weekends where I'm out with mom being silly, over at Jess' being silly, bumming about with Steve, going somewhere.

Fun!
1. What gets you out of bed in the morning? - The alarm clock! Aamir is gone during the week (usually) so I wake up quietly and get to work after a quick shower and prayer. On weekends, it's usually Aamir jarring me awake with "Honey! Are you up? Let's hang out!" which is usually met with the skunk eye from me. (more on this at my blog)
2. What scares you, and how often do you think about it? - Same as Dionne - losing a loved one...and snakes.
3. How important is making a home to you? For example, do you like a home to meditate in, cook good food in, or have people over? - All of the above! I hope people come here for good company and good food and stay because they feel welcome and comfortable enough to steal away to pray or nap or just read a book.
4. Where in the world would you like to travel next? - India is next on my wish list since that's where Aamir was born. Can't wait to see the "explosion" of the Indian culture I've already come to know here in the USA.
5. What is one of your fondest childhood memories? - Playing with our neighbors the Ludtkes. We spent summers playing baseball, winters going sledding and all the while fighting, laughing, teasing and just enjoying being kids.
6. How do you like to spend your weekends? - relishing my time with Aamir. I can be a bit stingy with his company on weekends, but I also like to hang out with friends and family...relaxing, working on the house, shopping, eating - anything, as long as it is with Aamir.
thanks for the cafe tip, my babe and i will wander down while my hubby is in meetings! thumbs up on the cheesecake mag blog.....your words spell out the love for your mom!

5. anti aging......sunscreen...but it is -12 rightnow in silly snowy canada and i skip it because i need the vitamen d!
Aw! I love your Q&A! Too bad I can't answer them right away, I need to go pretty soon, but then I think I'll post it on my blog, hehehe...
And yeah! It's just wonderful to realize how internet and blogging and stuffs really makes the world smaller!
i love these too. My favourite thing about blogging is meeting people from all over the world. It really is an awesome community!
What gets me out of the bed in the morning? Either my alarm clock or my very obnoxious roomate! haha xo
Q&A posts are the best!my little contribution...
1. 9am lectures!
2. losing a loved one too (especially my mum, not any time soon but still scary!)
3. strange that i dont really have a "home", i've lived in two very different countires with different families so i'm looking forward to get my own place one day!
4. somewhere with beautiful blue sea & white sand beach, maybe greece?
5. year7&8 in the new school was my happiest years!
6. i spend most on my own as bf is working & my friends have all left uni since i spent a year on placement, i'd love to do stuff on weekends like going to places though
1. What gets you out of bed in the morning? At the moment i wake up because of the sun (you see the blinds fell off the wall last week and i couldn’t be bothered putting them back up) and get up to do a morning devotion and morning exercise (run, ride and swim).
2. What scares you, and how often do you think about it? good question, rarely think about it, but i guess i’ll go with the losing a loved one.
3. How important is making a home to you? For example, do you like a home to meditate in, cook good food in, or have people over? i love a nice, clean home. I love cooking and always love having peeps over!
4. Where in the world would you like to travel next? heading back to the states this summer (usa summer), but would love to do an inca trek or an african safari.
5. What is one of your fondest childhood memories? my sister and i used to make up games all the time, like once we made up a game at my nanna’s house with code words (like BB for boat base, where my granddad’s old fishing tinny was down the side of the house) and we were on random missions and had to make it to certain places.
6. How do you like to spend your weekends? Depends on the weekend, i sometimes enjoying chillaxin, sometimes love a fun filled weekend of adventure, but always love doing it with friends.
Yay Andrew! I am so excited you'll be visiting! I can't wait!
Hey dionne! You just left a comment on my blog by accident and now i'd like to answer your questions! Great blog =)
1. What gets you out of bed in the morning? I just moved into a new apartment in Jersey City, NJ with great tall windows and the perfect sunlight wakes me up every morning for work. It gives me a couple minutes of morning reflection before starting my day at the office. It's lovely.
2. What scares you, and how often do you think about it? I agree with you on this one-losing a loved one. I don’t think about it often.
3. How important is making a home to you? For example, do you like a home to meditate in, cook good food in, or have people over? It is very important to me to make a home comfy with warm energy. My days are hectic at work in the city-from the moment I step out of my apartment, til’ the moment I’m back, and I like to have a place to that makes me feel like the rush is over. The essential things that I must always have in my home are décor which is unique to me, a workspace for me to get creative in, nice soft bedding and exotic incense to relax with, and my music always playing in the background. I guess right now it is a place of meditation for myself…but I can see that delightfully changing when I have my own family.
4. Where in the world would you like to travel next? I really do need to get out of this city and to somewhere fun and different. It would be nice to go to Hawaii since I’m very drawn to Polynesian music, dance, and culture.
5. What is one of your fondest childhood memories? I guess it would be the memories of simpler days with my mom and dad- Fridays my mom and I would pick up my dad from the train station after work and go out to this restaurant called ‘The Rodeo’. I could still vividly remember and almost taste the steak, baked potato with butter and sour cream, and the jello w/whipped cream dessert!
6. How do you like to spend your weekends? Spending time with my boyfriend, Jeff, going on little driving adventures out of the city- going to flea markets, walking in the woods, trying a new small town restaurant/café hours away…etc!
That's right-blogging definetely makes the world shrink...remembering the song-'it's a small world afterall lala...err, well smallER!
~h a p p y Spring*
1. What gets you out of bed in the morning? While I wish it was a morning quite time, ours is in the evening. Usually it's the day's tasks ahead of me that spur me to my feet.
2. What scares you, and how often do you think about it? Losing a loved one. I can second that. Mostly it's about losing my husband. Totally unfounded, but I can't shake it when I start thinking about it.
3. How important is making a home to you? For example, do you like a home to meditate in, cook good food in, or have people over? I love the idea of home. I love a safe haven, a place to come to just BE in. But more recently, God is showing me that this life is temporary and He can take me anywhere and make me at home. When I am at home, I love the homemaker life: cooking, making pretty, comfy cozying...
4. Where in the world would you like to travel next? Since marrying my husband he has taken me to Hawaii, Israel, Italy, and a few other US destinations. I still have never been to NY and I so badly want to accompany our HS seniors on their Europe trip. I also need to find my way up to Oregon to visit loved ones.
5. What is one of your fondest childhood memories? Vacations to Whidbey Island, anything involving my mom teaching us crafts or songs, fishing on the Intracoastal in West Palm Beach with my brother.
6. How do you like to spend your weekends? One of two ways: super-productive in a creative way, or totally chill at home. We usually go out to eat or to a movie on the weekends. And the best part is church on Sunday, I always look forward to it.
By the way, what a great prompt. I always love the interaction you encourage. I also love getting to know you Di.
1. Work gets me out of bed during the week. The gym does it on the weekend.
2. Plummeting to the earth in a plane crash and not blacking out on the way down.
3. A home isn't that important to me right now. My room is just necessity to survive. I think it will be important one day. I couldn't care less right now.
4. Down under or Italy
5. Still thinking
6. Staying up late. Going out and hanging out with friends. Working out at the gym in the morning.
oh my gosh i'm half korean too! i just looked at your husband's blog and his little blurb is something i could have said abt me. how crazy is that? so glad you love the korean culture and food! nice to connect with you via bri!
Amazing...love the words about blogging shrinking the world...
1. What gets you out of bed in the morning? Literally, my two hungry cats
2. What scares you, and how often do you think about it? Failing at my many goals...especially about helping others less fortunate than myself.
3. How important is making a home to you? Extremely important, I love the comforts of home, of welcoming others...
4. Where in the world would you like to travel next? Paris + India (The northern region near the Ganges and the Southern tip)
5. What is one of your fondest childhood memories? Baking my first cake with my mother and grandmother overseeing it.
6. How do you like to spend your weekends? Making elaborate meals, desserts, checking out new places in the city...
HOORAY+SWEET CONGRATULATIONS, Dionne for that excellent spread in Glamour...loved reading about your mom, your family life and that delicious cheesecake!!! thank you so much for sharing such a sweet accomplishment! so excited for you!!!
yes, i agree...the blogging world brings kindred spirits together...who knows if we would have ever met...but i'm so happy our paths have crossed through this world-wide web! i adore how you interact with your readers...your posts are intriguing and i also love getting to know you...
1. What gets you out of bed in the morning? when my hubby's home-his goodbye/morning kiss + my munchkins' grumbling lil' tummies. i love making them breakfast+seeing their precious faces.
2. What scares you, and how often do you think about it? scared wondering if there was more we could've done for our sweet Sinead...wishing my lil' Sinead was still with us on earth, not being able to watch her grow up with her brother + sister, hugging her for more than 15 mins...(I carry this in my heart for eternity) scared not being there for my lil' ones, to watch them grow, help them in need, or not being able to provide the best for them and scared for my hubby's safety when he goes off to war. i think about it when my lil' ones ask me about their Angel Sister, Sinead, when my lil' ones beg me to never grow old+when my hubby gets his orders...
3. How important is making a home to you? For example, do you like a home to meditate in, cook good food in, or have people over? home is where my heart is...and making a home(cooking, baking, playing, keeping it organized, raising my family, having tea parties etc) for my family and loved ones are one of the most important responsibilites i'm blessed to have. i want my lil' ones to know what every special comfort+love a home can be for them, so they can have their very own when they are grown.
4. Where in the world would you like to travel next? France, Europe, Hawaii and my birthhome-the Philippines. I've always dreamt of France-and would love to take my children overseas...to see the countryside, the romance of Paris, the shoppes, the delicious foods/pastries...all of Europe-I'd like to travel Europe with my hubby as a romantic 2nd honeymoon...Hawaii-to admire another tropical paradise...the Philippines-to see my parents' homes, to embrace my culture, to reconnect with my relatives and to show my lil' ones 1/2 of their heritage...and to climb coconut trees with them...
5. What is one of your fondest childhood memories? there are so many good memories...but the best is the one when even though my parents came from a different country with hardly any $+sacrificing so much for their lil' ones, they always had elaborate feasts for our birthdays and made us feel like princesses...i also loved memories of my mom's sugar cookies, getting into mischief with my irishtwin sis, candies in plastic bags left on our beds so we could go nighty-nite, climbing in the crib to sleep with one of my newest lil' sis, having 4 fab siblings to play with, popping round puffy plastic seatcovers in my pop's old GTO hot rod, riding in our orange or brown Volkswagons, trips to Arthur Treachers or Ponderosa...oh to be a kid again...
6. How do you like to spend your weekends? spending time with my loved ones, visiting my Sweet Angel Sinead after Sunday mass, having brunches, bbqs, picnics, capturing beauty with my camera, creating neat things, dreaming, baking, antiquing, watching dvds, having warm cups of teas, listening to my fav. tunes, reading comfort mags like Country Living, Country Home, Martha Stewart and endless family hugs + kisses with my munchkins + partner for life!
thank you so much for sharing this, Dionne...this is so good for the soule that i'll probably post on my blog too! (will try to find pics to go with too!) xoxo jo ;)
1. My little son, Grayson, gets me up in the morning by singing in his crib.
2. Losing a loved one is definitely the most scary thing to me so I try NOT to think about it!
3. I've always been a firm believer in the home being a reflection of those inside it so I love to have personal touches and warmth in my home. Mostly that is making people feel welcome, having comfortable places for them to stay and hang out, yummy goods in the oven or on the stove (or even just faking it with a great candle :)) and always an open door.
4. I'd love to travel anywhere in Europe - I get excited about the history, but my husband and I never got to go on a honeymoon last year when we got married and he'd like to go somewhere tropical so that sounds great to me too... Hawaii here we come!!
5. I loved being with my grandparents when I was little. They lived 1500 miles away so when we got to see them it was really special.
6. I love snuggling with my husband and my baby, having friends over for lunch or coffee, going outside when the weather is warm for walks or a picnic and having quiet movie nights at home with hubs.
I love your blog! I love that you two get up every morning together and pray. What a wonderful way to start the day off.
I'll come back to answer the questions. I'll have to check out Aroma cafe since it's in la.
