Presents!

I love presents. Most of all I love presents that come via snail mail. Opening packages, ripping off paper, reading the card - I love all that good stuff. My sister Karla sends me little packages now and then filled with some sort of surprise - sometimes chocolate, sometimes little makeup thingies - all cute little things. Back before Brian and I got married, when I lived in California and he lived in Houston, he would send me little parcels. They would arrive at my work, totally unexpected, and I would light up inside, and my coworkers would peer over to see what it was each time.

As some of you know, I am starting my own Etsy store soon selling little bits and pieces of me and my heart :)
Here are a few pieces that I have made. This first one was inspired by my husbo. I love, love, love making breakfast for him - it's one of my favorite things to do. I made a set of four flat cards that say "Toasted with Love", so that whenever you make breakfast for your loved ones, you can slip a little card along with their toast!

Another one is this print:

But phooey, as you can see, the corner is a little scuffed up. Bummer, hey?

Well, not for you.
I have noticed a lot of giveaways online lately. And as I posted here, I have been winning some of them (woo!). Kotori has a good one going on right now, and so does Tina, and also Art Gallery Fabrics. And then there's the Blah Blah Blahg, who has been having a giveaway every flippin' day this month! Goodies galore! So to jump on this present-giving bandwagon, I am going to give away these two little bits of me.

To get this lovely little stash from me, tell me what your favorite presents have been - your favorite received and your favorite given. Then next week, I will find one of those Random Picker things online and it will pick a winner for me. And to make it seem more like a present than a prize, I will try my best to wrap it up all lovely for you!

If you don't have a blog, please leave your email in your comment so that I can contact you for your mailing address if you win.

There are many, but one of my favorite gifts I've ever been given was a chair. Through the mail. Before my 21st birthday I was talking to my friend Meghan online, and she asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I jokingly said "a chair", but was not, in any way, serious about it.

A few days before my birthday I was on my home from work when mom told me there was a giant package in the front yard for me. I didn't quite know what she was on about until I got home and found a giant box, about 4 feet fall and 2 feet wide, sitting by the front door. It was heavy and I lugged it into the house before breaking into it, so excited to see what could be so big. Think The Dad from A Christmas Story.

So I get into the box, through the pounds and inches of foam around it, and there was a chair. A beautiful dark red mahogany chair. I laughed so hard I hurt myself and my mom could not, for the life of her, understand. Meghan got me a chair for my birthday. And it was my first real piece of furniture that belonged just to me.

It was an expensive chair too, because they included the price on the packing slip. But that didn't matter. Meghan, who was in Washington at the time in the Navy, sent me a chair. I still have it, and still love it.

I love giving gifts. I'm so excited about it that I sometimes almost ruin the surprise myself. When I gave Steve his wedding ring, it was three days before Christmas because I couldn't wait.

But one of my favorite gifts was a birthday card, actually. I took my darling Jenny to a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy concert for her birthday, at the House of Blues. Afterwords at the Meet & Greet, I secretly had the whole band sign a birthday card for her. Often while she was right there, oblivious to what was going on. It was really sweet of all the guys and they left little notes on it for her.

On her actual birthday I framed the car in an antique frame and gave it to her. She was stunned and really happy. It was a lot of fun sneaking the card around right under her nose. :-D

Sounds exciting. Though I'm blogging from abroad, I just want to share my memory of the Christmas present for my daughter when she was a small girl.
One day before Christmas, she wrote a letter to the Santa Clause that she was dying for a bicycle with training wheels. When she handed it to me, she said , "I asked him for a bicycle, but he may not be happy about it. My bike won't fit in his bag with many other presents. I'm afraid it is too big. Don't you think he will be in a trouble." I'd never expected that she was so considerate at her age. "Don't worry there's nothing the Santa can't handle. " I answered. Well, later my husband and I went to the shop and was happy to find a cute little red one for her with training wheels. We asked them to keep it until the Christmas Eve. We carried it out of our car after she went to bed and set it next to the Christmas tree and I decorated it with a big ribbon. Next morning on the Christmas day, I heard she was dashing to the living room with her brother and saw each present there. Her face was flushed with excitement. It is such a darling memory of our family.

When I turned seventeen, my friend J gave me a white dress with red flowers. It was the perfect 17-year-old-girl-dress and I loved it. His girlfriend at the time thought the idea less than brilliant, but who can blame her.

I still have the dress hanging in my closet (though I haven't worn it in like ten years, due to the not-being-a-17-year-old-girl-anymore-factor). But it was a great gift. In fact, so great that I ended up marrying the giver. But that's a whole other story.

So cute! Love that your work comes with a thoughtful intention to go with it.

My favorite present given to me the time my husband paid someone to come in and clean our house for me. It was the week of my birthday (we do birthday weeks). It was a total surprise and I could tell from the clean, fresh scent the moment I opened the door. Lovely and thoughtful surprise!!

I absolutely love giving gifts... I get so excited and love picking out or making just the right gift for our loved ones, so this is tough to pick. I think my husband would say his fave from me is Symphony tickets. We were about to have a baby and it was one of our last date night prior to having the babe. He liked that it was planned by me especially for him.

I love your art, you will do so well with your store! I want to win your goods as well, so here are my stories:)
The best gift I have given, that I can think of, was when I graduated from High School I wrote down in a journal all the memories my best friend and I had together so that she could remember them forever, she still has it. Nothing fancy tho.
The best present ever given to me, besides Daniel from the Lord (and of coarse salvation and all;) was this one year I really felt alone and the Lord was speaking to me a lot about being special to Him. As cheesy as it sounds there was this princess theme running throughout the year for me and Him. In specific was the story of Sleeping Beauty and that she went by another name, didn't know her true identity, but it would all come out someday...you know the story. Anyways, a friend of mine was in England and wanted to get me something and asked the Lord what he should get me and ended up with an old childrens version of Sleeping Beauty. He had no clue how meaningful it was to me during that time!

Hey, your little illustrations are great! I do love an interesting line (line quality, that is...Egon Schiele or Van Gogh anyone?)
Really, these are great, and your blog is so cute!

Hm, as for my favorite gift received: my dad has always given me tiny boxes and my cousin Cecily always gives me homemade goods.

And my favorite gift to give is a watercolor portrait. Sometimes for a wedding present, if the couple mails out a photo, I'll turn it into a double portrait, framed and ready to hang on the newlywed's wall.

Oh, and I'm starting to think about my own give-away and I've always wondered how to do it fairly. What is this randomization you speak of?

I too love getting packages in the mail! Nothing is more exiting!

A few of my favorite gift i've gotten:
My wedding Ring (I consider this a gift...I mean it came in a box)
A pair of my late Nana's (grandma) leather gloves (they are priceless)
My two chairs in my front room. They are gorgeous and were too pricey for my to buy (even on sale) but I was in love with them, so my mom and my brother got them for me as part of my wedding gift. They are my favorite!

I love giving gifts too! It's the way I show I love someone!

I can't wait for your shop to open...Love you work...and thanks for commenting on my blog...I loved getting to know you through your blog!

those are super cute! im very excited for you to pen your shop!

my favorite present was a stuffed animal lion my dad gave me. He had to move to South Carolina to start work before the rest of the family and when I came home from school on the day he left it was sitting on my bed. I named him dandy lion. I still have him. He's been lots of places and quite tattered but I know he watches over me.

My favorite gift i've given is a scrap book I made for my parents of our summer europe trips. My parents were so shocked that I had spent so much time on it. I'm pretty sure my mom cried for days every time she looked at it.

My favorite gift is anything handmade by my kids. Jack gave me a little book all about how special he thinks I am and I adore it. The comments (and illustrations) are so fun.

I love giving gifts. Part of what I love the most is the whole process of sitting and thinking about what the person likes. For my husband I loosely follow a theme - like work stuff might include cufflinks, a new messenger bag, some fun file folders, etc. My favorite thing I've given him was his 30th birthday. I was pregnant and due to have my son Jack the week before and he was graduating with his masters 2 months later, so we celebrated early with a whole "new man" concept. I got him an appointment to see a real hairdresser for a new haircut, a 2 hour massage, lunch out at a spot I knew he'd love, plus an appointment with a personal shopper to help him select some new clothes for when he was ready to start a new job. He loved it. The entire day was all about him.

How fun...Let's see...my favorite present I've received...that's a hard one! I'll have to think about it and get back to you.

However, I think my favorite present I've given would have to be the Merlot jelly I gave to all my friends and family this past Christmas. I'm going to blog about it tonight, so you'll have to check it out. :)

xoxo
